Indonesia Needs To Broaden Tax Base, Says OECD

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

27 October 2016

The OECD has urged Indonesia to broaden the tax base to build on the country's "extraordinary transformation over the past two decades," noting that low levels of public spending and tax revenue are holding back further improvement.

In its 2016 Economic Survey of Indonesia, the OECD said Indonesia's tax base is narrow and compliance is weak. Of Indonesia's 260 million citizens, only 27 million were registered taxpayers in 2014, and only 900,000 paid what they owed, the OECD said.

It recommended that increasing revenues is critical to financing investment and social programs. The number of taxpayers should also be increased through improved compliance and more efficient tax collection, it said.
