Indonesia Keen To Educate Taxpayers On Amnesty

The Indonesian Government is seeking to emphasize the difference between intentional and unintentional tax non-compliance, as it encourages taxpayers to avail themselves on an ongoing tax amnesty.

At a Ministry of Finance meeting with members of its Economist Forum in Jakarta on May 19, 2016, Brodjonegoro called for support in informing members of the public about the dinstinction between tax evasion and violation of tax rules, while pointing out that the latter usually pertains to errors made at the time of filing tax returns. He added that the tax amnesty program will help both small and large taxpayers to fix these errors.

"I hope economists can start talking to people about tax amnesty and its benefits," the Minister said.

In November 2015, it was confirmed that Indonesia will offer an amnesty this year - one of a number offered in recent years – to encourage taxpayers to regularize their tax affairs.

According to the Minister, the tax amnesty is intended to boost tax revenues while also expanding the taxpayer base. Earlier in April 2016, he stressed that protecting the confidentiality of taxpayer information is the Government's top priority and will be an important factor in the success of the amnesty program.
