Indonesia Announces New Tax Holiday Scheme

Indonesia is set to expand the range of tax incentives on offer to foreign investors as the Government continues to roll out its economic stimulus plan.

Economy minister Darmin Nasution revealed at a press briefing on November 5 that eligible investors in new special economic zones would qualify for income tax exemptions of up to 100 percent for periods lasting from 5 years to 25 years, depending on the level of investment and other factors. The new tax holidays are designed to attract foreign investment into Indonesia's more remote areas, where economic development has been slower.

The new incentives are the latest in a string of tax measures announced by the Government to encourage investment and boost economic growth.

In September, the Government expanded the scope of the "pioneer" tax incentive by including four new economic sectors. It also increased the maximum tax exemption for eligible investors from 70 percent to 100 percent, and increased the maximum duration of the pioneer tax holiday from 10 years to 15 years.

In recent weeks, the Government has also announced interest tax relief for exporters, exempted certain goods to be used in industrial processes from import duty, and exempted imported transportation equipment and related delivery services from value-added tax.
