India To Unveil New Aviation Policy

by Lorys Charalambous, for LawAndTax-News.com, Cyprus

02 November 2007

India's Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel last week announced that the government will unveil its new aviation policy in early 2008.

The proposals are thought to outline plans for the creation of several regional airports over the year, and further 'mega airports' over a ten year period. Provisions are also reported to be being put in place for the establishment of multi-model merchant airports.

The plans must now be scrutinised by the government's Infrastructure Committee, before being passed along to the Cabinet.

Speaking to the Daily India news service at the sidelines of a conference last week, the Minister explained the reasoning behind the introduction of the new policy, stating that:

"Today, the growth of aviation cannot be sustained by the existing infrastructure alone and, if the expansion of the aviation has to take place to newer or smaller cities, we must have a new policy, which therefore we are looking on that. By the year 2008, when the first quarter is complete, we will define a policy under which merchant airports and private airports can also come forward."
