India Pushing Again For Taxpayer Compliance

The Indian Income Tax Department has sent letters to 35,000 non-filers, urging those concerned to disclose their true income and pay the appropriate taxes.

The Department has now contacted 175,000 "high priority cases" as part of a compliance crackdown. A recent data-matching exercise identified around 1.2m non-filers and letters were initially sent out to around 105,000 individuals, containing a summary of the information possessed, along with a customized response sheet.

The Department says that the response to this initiative has been very encouraging, and that a large number of individuals have now paid the taxes due and filed the relevant Income Tax Returns.

A compliance management cell has been set up to monitor the return filing and tax payment of this target group.
