India Launches Initiatives To Ease Taxpayer Compliance

On October 27, 2015, India's Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, launched two initiatives aimed at significantly reducing the burden of compliance on small taxpayers.

The newly launched "e-Sahyog" digital project is aimed at reducing compliance costs, especially for small taxpayers. The projects will enable taxpayers to resolve issues relating to information mismatches on income tax returns electronically, without being required to attend the income tax office.

The Income Tax Department (ITD) will provide an end-to-end e-service using SMS and e-mails to inform the taxpayers of the mismatch. Taxpayers will simply need to visit the e-filing portal and login with their user ID and password and respond electronically.

"The objective of the ITD is to make life as easy as possible for the [taxpayers] and difficult only for those who consciously evade taxes. These digital initiatives will help in creating a positive environment," Jaitley said.

Jaitley also announced that the Government will temporarily establish camps in remote areas to support taxpayers to obtain permanent account number (PAN) cards. Currently, persons entering into purchase/sale transactions worth more than INR100,000 (USD1,523) are required to provide a PAN card.
