India Extends Filing Deadline

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

01 August 2013

The Indian Finance Ministry has announced that it is extending the income tax filing deadline, after reports of problems with its e-filing system.

According to the Finance Ministry, it has seen an "unprecedented surge" in the number of taxpayers using its online services. As of July 30, 9.2m Indians have filed online, a figure up 46.8 percent on that recorded in 2012.

However, this has had a knock-on effect. The Ministry admits that some taxpayers have been unable to access the e-filing portal, but claims that the problems are largely due to the network constraints experienced by local internet service providers.

The deadline for returns has now been extended from July 31, to August 5. The Ministry is urging taxpayers to make use of this extra time, and to file their returns and pay the taxes due.
