India Extends Deadline For Linking Aadhaar ID With Tax Returns

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

11 December 2017

The Indian Ministry of Finance announced on December 8 that the deadline to link the Aadhaar biometric ID card to tax returns has been further extended.

Initially, taxpayers had been obligated to link their Aadhaar number to their Permanent Account Number by August 31. This was subsequently extended to December 31. However, the Finance Ministry revealed that in view of the difficulties faced by some taxpayers in undertaking this, the deadline would be changed to March 31, 2018.

The unique Aadhaar number is issued based on demographic and biometric data. Privacy concerns have been expressed about linking the two, with critics arguing that the system could be open to abuse.
