IRS Reduces Tax Preparer PTIN Fees

by Scott Hamilton, Tax-News.com, Washington

15 August 2016

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued final regulations (T.D. 9781) that confirm the reduced user fee to be charged on applications for, or renewals of, a tax return preparer tax identification number (PTIN).

The regulations are effective from September 9, 2016, and adopt, without change, the temporary regulations issued in October last year. The IRS recalculated its cost of providing services under the PTIN application and renewal process fee, and the fee is reduced from USD50 to USD33.

The PTIN regulations require a tax return preparer who prepares or who assists in preparing all, or substantially all, of a tax return or claim for refund after December 31, 2010, to have a PTIN.
