IRS Offers Tax Relief To Puerto Rico

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

06 October 2017

The United States is to provide tax relief to residents of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by extending the usual 14-day absence period to 117 days for the presence test for residency under the tax rules.

US taxpayers are required to be present in the US for at least 183 days in a calendar year in order to claim residence. Usually, up to 14 days are allowed as an exception to this requirement in the case of a declared disaster. The IRS has extended this period to 117 days due to the "unprecedented and catastrophic damage" caused by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

The relief applies to residents who were evacuated due to Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria, or residents who were away during the hurricanes and have been unable to return to their homes. The 117-day relief period applies from September 6 to December 31, 2017.

The announcement was made by the IRS in a statement released on October 4, 2017.
