IRS Announces New Website Competition Winners

by Mike Godfrey,, Washington

14 June 2016

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the winners of the "Tax Design Challenge," its first crowdsourcing competition to construct a future web page design for the agency that would make its online information more understandable to taxpayers.

Out of 48 submissions, winners from California, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C., were among those selected in categories covering overall design, taxpayer usefulness, and best financial capability.

Participants were challenged to organize and present tax data in new ways that would make tax information easier to understand and use. According to the IRS, the goal of the design challenge was "to develop new concepts for designing, organizing, and presenting tax information in a way that makes it easier for taxpayers to understand their taxpayer responsibilities and effectively use their own taxpayer data."

"This was a first-time endeavor for the IRS and one that reflects our strong commitment to engaging the public in efforts to build for the future state of tax administration," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. "We saw a strong response from the participants, and the winning designs are creative displays of what a future online taxpayer account could look like."

The Tax Design Challenge was part of the IRS's broader effort to plan online tax services. Its introduction recalled the concern expressed by the National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson earlier this year that the IRS would, in the future, be concentrating too heavily on taxpayer interactions through its online services, and that it may scale back the telephone and face-to-face services it has traditionally provided for taxpayers.
