ICOMIA Issues Guide On New EU Requirements

27 August 2015

Industry group European Boating Industry and the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) have announced the release of an updated guide on the new EU Recreational Craft Directive (2013/53/EU), which will come into force on January 18, 2016.

Initially launched in English at the Marine Equipment Trade Show last November, the guide is now available in three languages, downloadable on both Apple and Android tablets or available as a PDF.

The main purpose of the guide is to offer companies (especially smaller ones without dedicated product compliance staff) a practical, easy-to-understand guide that will help them ensure that the product they build, import, or distribute on the EU single market is fully compliant and safe. From January 18, 2016, boats, personal watercraft, engines, and certain components (whether imported or produced in the EU) will have to be assessed according to the new EU rules. Already-built products that were assessed according to the "old" EU Directive 94/25/EC as amended by Directive 2003/44/EC will have a year to be sold as they are (that is, until January 17, 2017).

ICOMIA said that the positive feedback the two organizations have received so far convinced them to seek to have the guide translated into as many languages as possible. Currently English, French, and Estonian versions are available, while more translations are under preparation, including German and Swedish versions, which will be released this summer, and Italian, which is due in autumn.
