Hong Kong Travel Agent Fee Waivers Gazetted

The Travel Agents (Fee Concessions) Regulation 2016, which seeks to give effect to waivers for 12 months of certain license fees by Hong Kong's travel agents, was gazetted on May 20.

The Regulation will implement the short-term measures announced in the 2016-17 Budget to reduce the operating costs of Hong Kong's tourism industry, which faces keen competition from neighboring travel destinations. It will waive fees payable by travel agents during the 12-month concession period from November 20, 2016, to November 19, 2017.

The HKD485 (USD62.50) monthly fee for a license or renewal of a license will be waived if its validity period begins within the concession period, subject to a maximum amount of HKD5,820 for 12 months in aggregate.

In addition, the fee of HKD925 for a duplicate license for display at every branch, and the fee of HKD665 for amending a license to add an additional address for opening a new branch, will both be waived, as will the fee of HKD630 for applying for a new license.

"Travel agents do not need to apply for the above waivers separately because the fees concerned will be automatically waived if the conditions are met," a Government spokesman said.

The Regulation will be tabled at the Legislative Council for negative vetting on May 25, 2016. Subject to its passage, the Regulation will take effect from November 20, 2016, dovetailing with the existing travel agency concession period.
