Hong Kong Airport Witnesses Traffic Growth

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

31 October 2011

Hong Kong International Airport, publishing statistics for the third quarter of 2011, said that the airport has experienced solid growth in terms of passenger volumes and aircraft movements.

During the month of September 2011, passenger traffic climbed 5.4% from a year earlier, to 4.3 million, while flight movements increased by 6.1% to 27,695. For the first three quarters of 2011, passenger traffic has increased by 5.8%, while flight movements surged 10.3% to 248,020. In the last twelve months the airport has serviced 53.1 million passengers and 329,705 aircraft movements, representing year-on-year increases of 6.5% and 11.2%, respectively.

Cargo volumes have contracted however, the airport attributing this to weak exports. Cargo volume has contracted by 6.1% year on year. However, a lesser decline of 3.9% for the first three quarters of 2011 was recorded, suggesting that cargo volumes are recovering.

Commenting, Stanley Hui Hon-chung, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said: “In addition to receiving more air passengers, I’m also delighted to see airlines choose to operate new generation aircraft at HKIA, which reflects the significance of HKIA as a regional and international aviation hub. Cargolux has just deployed the new B747-8 freighter aircraft to fly regularly between Luxembourg and Hong Kong.”

Hon-Chung also noted that Boeing chose Hong Kong to play host to the first flight of the new Dreamliner 787.
