Guernsey Telecoms Dismisses 1p Per Minute Broadband Charge Rumours

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

25 September 2002

Speaking to the Guernsey Press and Star on Friday, Guernsey Telecoms dismissed rumours that its new broadband internet access will cost a penny per minute, explaining that the price structure has not been finalised.

'GT will be announcing its charges in due course, as will the other internet service providers. They are in addition to charges announced in La Gazette Officielle but there will be no penny a minute call charge with those products,' GT's broadband product managers, Rob Pearson explained to the newspaper, which reported that it had been contacted by concerned Guernsey Telecoms customers with regard to the rumoured charges.

Mr Pearson also announced that other ISPs based on the Island will be able to launch their own broadband services at the same time as GT Online, on October 8.

Although GT owns the network, and other ISPs must therefore purchase the company's fast-access services in order to be able to offer them to their customers, Mr Pearson assured the Guernsey Press that GT would not take advantage of its privileged position, and explained that it would be doing all it could to make sure that all interested parties are able to launch competitive broadband services at the same time:

'ISPs will need to make sure that they place their order for SP Connect soon so that they will be ready in time...GT will do everything it can to ensure other ISPs are connected by their chosen launch date,' he explained.

'It's worth pointing out that any new and existing dial-up customers will continue to be supported by GT Online. We know that not everyone will go for broadband and they don't have to use it,' Mr Pearson concluded.
