Green Guide For Boat Charter Firms Published

by Amanda Banks,, London

24 February 2014

A new Green Guide for Boat Charter Companies has been published ahead of the 2014 season by The Green Blue (TGB) – an environmental program launched by the British Maritime Federation (BMF) and Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

The Guide providers boat charter companies with advice to make their businesses more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Environmental efficiency can be a key selling point for some clients, the BMF pointed out.

Jane Swan, TGB Project Manager, said: "Environmental initiatives have never been so easy to implement, and we hope that our new guide will prompt more charter companies to take the first steps to being greener both on and off the water. Small changes will not only make the business more efficient but can often save costs too."

The Guide also contains a case study on BMF member Sunsail, which highlights best practice and shows other charter companies how easy good marine stewardship can be.

Jackie McLean, Sunsail's UK Operations Manager, said: "We started to look at the environmental performance of our Port Solent operation and our fleet of F40's back in 2008, and with The Green Blue's help we have made significant progress.

"Our staff and skippers are now fully engaged and trained to be as environmentally responsible as possible. It gives our customers the opportunity to enhance their experience on the water and I hope these good environmental habits will stay with them the next time they take to the water. We're delighted to be able to share our experience within this new guide as it's in the interest of the sector as a whole and to protect our waters."
