Gibraltar Government Ups Stakes In Publicity Campaign

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

The government of Gibraltar stepped up its campaign to derail the - seemingly already floundering - Anglo-Spanish talks over sovereignty of the Rock completely last week, with the placing of full page colour adverts in UK daily and Sunday national newspapers.

The campaign, which commenced last Wednesday, and will continue until May 25, is designed to alert the British public to the fact that the United Kingdom is planning to present the people of Gibraltar with a 'done deal' over sovereignty which would hang over the territory forever, regardless of the result of a planned sovereignty referendum.

'Gibraltar Seeks Your Support - No deals with the Spain against the wishes of the people of Gibraltar', the advertisements read, and a picture of the highly attended March mass demonstration against the talks is included for extra emphasis.

The Panorama news service reported last week that Chief Minister, Peter Caruana will be spearheading the media campaign, and following his visit to London, will be visiting Madrid.

'We said that our campaign would be incremental. Now is the time to reach out directly to public opinion in this way,' the newspaper quoted Mr Caruana as announcing prior to his departure for the UK. He continued: 'The advertisements are designed to explain what Gibraltar is, and what the British government propose to do with our sovereignty and other political rights.'
