Gibraltar Business Applauds Clampdown On Unlicensed Ships

The Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce has applauded a decision by the Gibraltar Port Authority to turn back unlicensed vessels attempting to supply merchant ships in Gibraltar waters.

The Chamber said that while it supports free trade, such a policy must be even-handed. The Chamber wants to see local laws adhered to, whereby foreign companies wishing to trade on a regular basis in Gibraltar should be registered in the jurisdiction and pay taxes accordingly, in the same way as Gibraltar companies would be expected to do so in Spain or elsewhere.

Commenting on this latest development, Nicholas Russo, the Chamber’s President stated:

“Gibraltar companies have higher operating costs than those in Spain. We would urge the Gibraltar customs authorities at the land frontier to enforce the same criteria used by the Gibraltar Port Authority when allowing entry to non-local traders seeking to supply goods into Gibraltar."

"Gibraltar-registered businesses which been established for many years have made substantial investments and contributions to the local economy. We welcome foreign companies who want to come and sell their goods in Gibraltar, but not at the expense of hollowing out Gibraltar’s economy. They should make their contribution and pay their way.”
