Germany Tasks Industry Experts To Tackle Fiscal Crime

The German federal state of Baden-Württemberg has set up a special unit within its tax investigations department to combat fiscal crime at federal level.

The unit will undertake investigations to detect tax evasion strategies and uncover systematic patterns of fraud, focusing on e-commerce in particular. The team will exchange information with special units established in other states in Germany. The unit comprises a specialized team of tax investigators, corporate and sales tax auditors, and information technology specialists.

Baden-Württemberg's Finance Minister Nils Schmid said the special tax evasion unit is central to the tax investigation team, and forms a further building block in the federal state's fight against tax evasion and its efforts to increase tax compliance. Tax evasion is a cross-border issue and a nationwide exchange of tax information is vital, he said.

Baden-Württemberg's new federal state Government also aims to create an additional 500 posts and 500 training places within the tax administration department in the current legislative period to further strengthen its tax evasion arsenal.
