Germany Relaxes Restrictions On Mobile Device Use

Lufthansa has announced that passengers will be able to use their smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other electronic devices uninterrupted for their entire time on board on an increased number of flights from March 1, 2014.

The announcement comes following a policy change from the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) in January that permitted passengers to use their electronic devices in flight mode on Boeing 747-8s from gate to gate. Prior to this, all devices had to be completely switched off during take-off and landing.

German authorities have now newly included the entire Airbus fleet in this decision, which will enable the uninterrupted use of mobile devices and tablets on almost 250 Lufthansa aircraft from next month. Lufthansa is also seeking LBA approval for other aircraft types as soon as possible.

Jens Bischof, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Lufthansa German Airlines, said: "We are delighted that we have now been granted official approval for our guests to use their smartphones, tablets and computers uninterrupted on all Airbus aircraft, including our A380s. We know that many passengers would like to use their devices uninterrupted while on board. We will now be able to facilitate this on most of our flights."

The change from Germany follows movement on the issue in the US. The US Federal Aviation Authority first announced on October 31, 2013, that it was considering a change to its policy to allow US airlines to permit portable electronic devices to be used while an aircraft is taxiing, taking off, and landing. Many US airlines have now exercised this option.
