G-20 States Launching Fewer Anti-Dumping Probes

by Mike Godfrey,, Washington

09 November 2015

The number of anti-dumping investigations launched by G-20 countries decreased significantly in the period between January and June, 2015, compared with the previous six months, according to a new World Trade Organization (WTO) report.

G-20 members launched 78 anti-dumping investigations, compared with 115 in the prior six months, according to the WTO's latest Report on G-20 Trade Measures.

New anti-dumping investigations during July 2014 to June 2015 declined by about 20 percent year-on-year, the WTO said. The number of investigations launched by Argentina, Australia, Brazil, the Republic of Korea, and the United States significantly decreased, while the number of investigations started by the EU, India, Mexico, and Turkey increased.

The report also noted that the number of trade-restrictive measures in place in G-20 nations remained unchanged between mid-May and mid-October 2015. In this period, G-20 economies introduced 86 new trade-restrictive measures. This equates to an average of just over 17 new measures per month, the same as in the previous reporting period (mid-October 2014 to mid-May 2015).

However, because countries have removed these measures at a slower rate, the overall stockpile of restrictive measures grew. Of the 1,441 trade-restrictive measures introduced by G-20 economies since 2008 and recorded by the WTO, only 354 had been removed by mid-October 2015. 1,087 trade restrictive measures remained in place, up five percent compared with the last report.

The report also found that, during the reporting period, a total of 62 measures aimed at facilitating trade were implemented – a monthly average of 12 measures and the fewest since November 2013.
