France Launches Tourist Tax Search Engine

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

29 April 2016

So extensive is France's patchwork of tourist taxes that the Ministry of Finance has launched a "search engine" to help tourists, accommodation owners, and tour operators find the right amount to pay.

France's tourist tax, known as taxe de séjour, is charged at municipal level and is collected by the owner of the accomodation where the tourist stays. The amount varies depending on the standard of the accommodation, and ranges from EUR0.20 (USD0.23) per person per night for stays in marinas, camping and caravan sites, and low-cost accommodation, to up to EUR4 for luxury hotel stays.

The tourist tax is only charged in areas designated as tourist areas, and places situated on the coast or in mountainous areas.

The new search facility, announced by the Department of Finance on April 28, allows users to view information on more than 2,000 tourist taxes across 14,745 communes, providing information such as rates and periods of collection.

According to the announcement, the Tax Department created the website to help "tourism stakeholders," including hotels, rental companies, booking platforms, and individuals, to pay the correct amount of tax.
