France Agrees To Cut 'Tampon Tax'

The French Government has announced it will cut value-added tax on tampons and sanitary towels from 20 percent to 5.5 percent.
The announcement marks a u-turn from the Government, after it previously rejected calls for tax relief as too costly. However, French lawmakers subsequently voiced resounding support for the measure, which would cost France revenues worth EUR55m (USD60m) per year.
Other countries are also under pressure to lower VAT on such products. In August, Australia decided not to provide tax relief, but the UK has said it will be pushing to remove tax on these products with the European Commission's approval.
