Fine Gael Spokesman Calls For Appointment Of E-Commerce Minister

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

30 November 2001

Fine Gael spokesman on enterprise, trade and employment, Deputy Charles Flanagan TD has urged the Taoiseach to appoint a Minister of State, with specific responsibility for e-commerce to renew confidence in the IT sector.

Deputy Flanagan TD was speaking following the long-awaited appointment of the new Board of the Information Society Commission, announced on Tuesday. He said: 'After 11 months of procrastination the Taoiseach has finally made up his mind and appointed this board. The new Chairman of the Board, Danny O'Hare and his fellow members are now charged with defining and enhancing Ireland's role as a major player in the global e-revolution. It is vitally important to our economy that we maintain our competitive edge and enhance our knowledge based skills.'

'If Ireland wants to participate and prosper in today's global economy,' added Mr Flanagan. 'We will first have to bridge the "Digital Divide", whereby information and communication technology is accessible and available to all segments of the population. The new Board of the Information Society Commission must address this urgently.'

Mr Flanagan accused the government of losing its focus and leadership in the e-business and e-commerce arena following the 11 month delay in appointing the Board. 'It has sent out worrying signals to the IT industry by failing to make these important appointments for the past 11 months,' he complained.
