Fall-off Noted In German Environmental Tax Burden

Environmental tax revenue as a percentage of Germany's overall tax take has fallen to its lowest level in more than 20 years, according to the country's statistical agency.

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said in a release on November 15 that environmental tax revenue represented 4.9 percent of total revenues from taxes and social contributions in 2016, the lowest level since 1995, when the share stood at 7.9 percent.

The report shows that environmental taxes as a percentage of total revenue have been declining steadily since 2010. However, this is as a result of a faster increase in revenues from taxes and social security (3.8 percent) than environmental tax receipts (0.9 percent) over the same period.

Environmental taxes in Germany currently consist of energy and transport taxes, Destatis said, and include the energy tax, the electricity tax, the nuclear fuel tax, the sale of emissions allowances, the motor vehicle tax, and the aviation tax on flight tickets.
