Expert Witness Says Kazaa Could Monitor Users

by Mary Swire, for LawAndTax-News.com, Hong Kong

Giving evidence in the copyright infringement case brought against Kazaa by the Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI) body, expert witness Professor Leon Sterling suggested that the peer-to-peer software provider could monitor the file sharing activities of its users, if necessary.

Speaking in Sydney's federal court, Professor Sterling, chair of Software Innovation and Engineering for the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Melbourne suggested that user activity statistics can be "collected and reported to a system operator in the same way as statistics about the usage of a single website are able to be collected and reported".

He went on to add that:

"Kazaa Media Desktop (KMD) could easily collect statistics that could be gathered at supernodes if it does not do so already."

Although he suggested that it would be relatively straightforward to collect the information required to track user downloads in the form of an activity log, he reportedly acknowledged under cross-examination that he hadn't examined in detail the timeframe or cost necessary to implement his suggestions.
