Estonia Consults With Uber On Tax Framework

The Estonian Tax and Customs Board (MTA) is collaborating with global technology company Uber on how to tax its on-demand 'ride-sharing' service.

The rise of the "sharing economy," which connects private individuals who are offering and seeking services, has created challenges for tax authorities.

The MTA and Uber have decided to set up a working group to discuss a platform through which tax revenues can be collected, with the findings expected to be presented next year.

The Director General of the MTA, Marek Helm, said that, in many sectors, brand new business models have emerged and the authorities need to respond to the new challenges they present. He stressed the importance of a simple and transparent tax system that will encourage both enterprise and tax compliance.

CEO of Uber Estonia, Enn Metsar, added: "We are excited to be able to work within the framework of a pilot project with a far-sighted and innovative public authority. Global digital service providers, such as Uber, help increase the potential for creating new opportunities and new growth."
