Electric Taxiing Solution Inventors Target China

Technology companies Honeywell and Safran have reached out to a Chinese company, China Aviation Energy & Emission Solutions (CAEES), to help evaluate the potential benefits for Chinese airlines and airports of their new electric taxiing system.

Safran and Honeywell predict that the use of their technology, EGTS – electric green taxiing system – on short-haul fleets in China could result in savings of more than USD250,000 per aircraft per year.

EGTS uses an aircraft's electrical power to drive motors on the main landing gear wheels, enabling the aircraft to push back and taxi without using its main engines. According to Honeywell and Safran, the technology saves up to four percent of the block fuel consumption per flight, as well as up to 75 percent of carbon emissions and up to 50 percent of mono-nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The system was first demonstrated during the Paris Air Show in 2013.

CAEES will support the two companies by assessing Chinese airports' on-ground operational practices and associated regulations. The partners will also work together to quantify fuel savings and greenhouse gas emissions reduction in China, in order to substantiate potential benefits.

The General Manager of CAEES said traffic for aircraft at Chinese airports is growing, with the aviation sector in the region expanding rapidly, leading to longer taxiing times.

Olivier Savin, the Vice President of Safran's EGTS Program, said, "The phenomenal and sustained growth of the Chinese aviation industry makes it a privileged market for EGTS and we must ensure, during the development, that our system meets the specific operating requirements in this region of the world."
