Environmental taxes accounted for 6.3 percent of tax revenues in the European Union (EU) in 2014, according to data released by the European Commission.

The Commission said that environmental taxes generated revenue of EUR343.6bn (USD387bn) in 2014, compared to EUR282bn in 2004. However, it added that environmental taxes as a share of the EU's total tax take has decreased over the same period, from 6.8 percent to 6.3 percent.

Taxes on energy made up more than three-quarters (76.5 percent) of the total revenue from environmental taxes. Taxes on transport accounted for 19.9 percent and those on pollution and resources for 3.6 percent.

Slovenia, Croatia, and Greece recorded the highest shares of environmental taxes as a proportion of total EU revenue. Levies in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Sweden contributed the least.
