EU, IMO Responding To Sea Migration Crisis

As concerns rise about deaths at sea from the unregulated passage of migrants, the European Commission and International Maritime Organization (IMO) are stepping up measures to deal with the crisis.

In response to recent events in Italy, the EC has pledged to give EUR13.7m in emergency funding from the Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund (AMIF) to the country. It has also agreed to extend Frontex Joint Operation Triton until at least the end of 2015 and will continue to implement the recommendations of the Mediterranean Task Force.

Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu of the IMO has called for more concerted action to address the issue of unregulated sea passage, stating that it is placing "intolerable strain on rescue services and merchant vessels."

To develop potential ways forward, the IMO will host an inter-agency meeting on the Traveling of Migrants by Sea on March 4, 2015, with the expected participation of a number of United Nations agencies as well as other organizations including shipping and industry bodies.

"I firmly believe that there is scope for greater efforts by the international community to better manage the process of migration," Sekimizu said.
