EU Begins Market Opening Towards Moldova

The European Union (EU) looks set to open its market to wine imports from Moldova, in advance of the creation of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).

The European Commission will propose to the Council and Parliament that the Autonomous Trade Preferences be modified to completely liberalize the process of importing Moldovan wines. The move is intended to ease some of the difficulties Moldova is experiencing with its wine exports, and the Commission says it will ask the Council and Parliament to do their utmost to ensure a speedy adoption of the changes.

The EU finalized its negotiation of an Association Agreement with Moldova in June. The deal foresees the creation of a DCFTA and Moldova's economic integration into the EU. The Agreement is expected to be initialed at the Eastern Partnership Summit, which will take place in November. The DCFTA will be provisionally applied soon after the overall agreement is officially signed.

Dacian Ciolos, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "The European Union's market is a sustainable alternative and a viable pole of stability for the Moldovan wine sector. A fully opened EU market for Moldovan wines in a time when Moldovan farmers are in difficulty, reflects that, beyond being a very successful economic integration project, the EU is also a space of solidarity."
