EFTA, Indonesia Continue Push For Free Trade Pact

13 November 2017

The European Free Trade Association, comprising Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway, has said free trade negotiations are ongoing with Indonesia, with a 13th round of negotiations having taken place over the five days to November 10, 2017.

According to a statement released following the latest talks, EFTA said the two parties had held constructive and substantive discussions in most areas under negotiation, including on trade in goods and services; investment; intellectual property rights; and trade remedies. It said legal and horizontal issues were also discussed, including dispute settlement provisions, competition, customs and rules of origin, trade facilitation, government procurement, cooperation, and sustainable development.

Negotiations towards the free trade agreement started back in 2010. It has been agreed that intersessional work in all areas should take place ahead of a next meeting on the deal, to take place in the first quarter of 2018.

Merchandise trade between EFTA and Indonesia amounted to USD3.3bn in 2016. The EFTA states exported goods worth USD688m, with the leading exports being machinery and mechanical appliances, mineral fuels, and pharmaceutical products. EFTA imported goods worth USD2.6bn in 2016, primarily comprising gold, followed by footwear and electrical machinery.
