EFTA-Central America Free Trade Talks Nearing Completion

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

20 February 2013

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) - comprising Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland - has announced that it made substantial progress during a sixth round of negotiations, held on February 12-15, 2013 in Geneva, towards a free trade agreement with four Central American states.

The talks sought to resolve outstanding areas of discussion with Guatemala. Following the meeting, EFTA reported that further progress was made in the area of trade in goods and services, and the number of remaining issues had been substantially reduced.

The EFTA-Central America negotiations were launched in February 2012 and were substantially concluded, after five rounds, with Costa Rica and Panama in December. The agreement will also include Honduras, with a deal expected to be signed by mid-2013.

Bilateral merchandise between EFTA and the nations reached USD1bn in 2011, up from USD754m in 2010. EFTA's top exports to Central America include machinery and mechanical appliances; pharmaceutical products; optical, medical and surgical instruments and mineral fuel/oils. EFTA imports mainly fruits and nuts; ships, boats and floating structures; coffee, tea, mate and spices; as well as precious stones and metals.
