Democrats Seek Say On New Republican Health Care Bill

Ron Wyden (D - OR) has requested that the Senate Committee on Finance, of which he is Ranking Member, should hold a full committee hearing on the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA).

BCRA is the Senate's version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), which was passed by the House of Representatives in May. The proposed legislation would repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, including a number of its taxes such as the 3.8 percent net investment income tax, the Additional Medicare Tax, the individual and employer health insurance mandates, and taxes on insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical device makers, and tanning salons.

"While Senate Republicans continue their negotiations on the BCRA behind closed doors, I ask for the legislation to be considered in hearings by the Senate Finance Committee and under regular order on the Senate floor," Wyden said in a letter to Orrin Hatch (R - UT), the Finance Committee's Chairman.

"The Senate has not held a single public hearing on the BCRA to date. This secretive, rushed process is offensive to the bipartisan history of the Senate Finance Committee and unacceptable for a bill with such far-reaching implications for Americans' access to health care."
