Czech Republic Launches New Anti-Tax Evasion Force

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

The Czech Republic's Ministry of Interior has announced the official launch of a new anti-tax evasion unit, called "Cobra," following the signing of a protocol agreement on information exchange between customs, tax, and police chiefs.

Minister Milan Chovanec described the move as "the beginning of a long journey," and promised results by the end of the year. Finance Minister Andrej Babiš explained that "Cobra" would in particular target VAT and excise duty evasion.

Along with information exchange, the Protocol sets out how cases for investigation will be selected and other details concerning cooperation.

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka announced plans for "Cobra" back in February, inspired by the success of a similar arrangement in Slovakia.
