Czech Political Row Over Biofuel Tax Breaks

by Lorys Charalambous, Tax-News.com, Cyprus

01 June 2015

An extension for tax incentives for biofuel production in the Czech Republic has caused a widening schism between the Government and opposition parties in the Czech Parliament.

The tax breaks to support biofuel production had been criticized by opposition lawmakers due to the Finance Minister Andrej Babis's stake in the nation's largest rapeseed biofuel producer. Previously it was anticipated that the tax breaks would be removed from the end of the second quarter, but the Government passed legislation to extend the incentives until 2020.

Opposition parties subsequently launched a vote of no confidence, but, as expected, due to its parliamentary majority, the coalition Government comfortably survived the vote. Babis was reported as rejecting a conflict of interest, noting that he did not table the bill or participate in the vote, and stating that his company has not profited from the tax breaks.
