Cruise Line Returns To Gibraltar

by Jason Gorringe,, London

04 May 2012

The Gibraltar government has welcomed the announcement that a Spanish cruise line operator will return to operating in and from the Port of Gibraltar after a three-year absence.

The Gibraltar call will be offered as part of a package targeting the French market in Pullmantur cruise's 2013 offering, with a total of three calls scheduled. Pullmantur's Malta-flagged fleet last operated this particular product in 2009.

Discussions on the inclusion of Gibraltar for this product in next year’s programme were initiated at a meeting at the International Tourism Fair held earlier this year in Madrid, Spain. The meeting was attended by the Gibraltar Minister for Tourism, Public Transport and the Port, Neil Costa, representatives from the Gibraltar Tourist Board and Calypso Tours, who are the shore excursion agents for Pullmantur Cruises in Gibraltar.

Welcoming the announcement, Costa said: “This is excellent news and sees the return of a very welcome market segment to the Port of Gibraltar. Our government is committed to working closely with private operators and to engage actively with cruise operators not just to continue to call at Gibraltar but to increase such calls.”

Pullmantur has a fleet of four cruise liners, catering for an average of 2,066 guests, and with an average length of 223m. Pullmantur operates along four separate routes, to the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, North Sea and Caribbean Sea.
