Construction To Start On Dubai Aviation City

A crucial phase in the construction of the Dubai World Central (DWC) project - a gargantuan industrial, logistics and residential development scheme at the centre of which will be the truly colossal new Al Maktoum International Airport - has been completed, allowing work on the proposed Dubai Aviation City to start.

DWC announced recently that grading work on the fourth phase of the project has now been completed, which has cleared crucial ground for the construction of an executive jet terminal and a huge maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility, which promises to be the largest of its type anywhere in the world.

“With the fourth phase of grading complete we can start to plan the allotment of land for DWC Aviation City tenants,” explained Abdulla Al Falasi, DWC’s Director of Marketing & Corporate Communications.

“This will enable DWC Aviation City operators to be operational by 2010-11,” he added.

Almost 65 million cubic metres of earth have been removed over the four grading phases, covering an area of over 74 square kilometres which will accommodate the Dubai Logistics City, the DWC Residential City and the Al Maktoum International Airport.

The rulers of Dubai are not known for doing things by halves, as evidenced by the outlandish developments just off the coast of the emirate such as the Palm Island, and the Al Maktoum International Airport is an undertaking that matches their ambitions to transform the formerly oil-dependent fishing port into a regional and economic powerhouse.

When complete, the new airport will be by far the world’s largest passenger and cargo hub with a design capacity of over 12 million tonnes of cargo and 120 million passengers a year. The first of six planned runways was completed on schedule last year in world-record time (600 days) at a cost of AED1bn (USD272mn), and at 4.5km long they will be capable of handling the largest passenger aircraft currently in operation, including the A380 superjumbo.

The airport will be 10 times the size of the current Dubai International Airport and Dubai Cargo Village combined.

Al Maktoum International Airport will also boast hotels and shopping malls, support facilities and state-of-the-art maintenance facilities which will create a regional maintenance hub capable of all checks on all aircraft, including the A380.

The airport will be linked to the existing Dubai International Airport via an express rail system and ultimately will be serviced by the Dubai Light Railway Network (Dubai Metro). Some 100,000 car parking spaces will be available for airport parking and car rental services.

Other airport structures being built are an AED278 million Cargo Terminal; an AED143 million Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower; AED908 million aprons and associated taxiways; AED108 million Fuel Farms; and AED120 million navigational aids package.
