Colombia's Inland Revenue Warns Of Fraudulent Emails

by Glen Shapiro, Tax-News.com, Washington

27 July 2017

Colombia's Inland Revenue has warned that fraudulent emails are being sent out impersonating the agency.

It said that emails are being sent out requesting additional income tax payments to cover mistakes found in a taxpayer's returns.

The Inland Revenue confirmed that the emails, which contain spelling and grammatical errors, are fraudulent and asked taxpayers to contact it about similar requests for payment.

The authority has established a section on its website to verify whether any such letters are fraudulent.

It warned taxpayers to ignore emails that request they click on any link, not to respond to messages that ask for personal or financial information, or open messages or attachments from unknown senders. The authority also recommended that taxpayers use programs that automatically check if a URL that appears on mail is legitimate.
