China Will Open First Private Jet Hub Next Year

Work has begun on what is expected to be China's first ever private jet hub, it has been announced.

The Hongqiao Airport Business Aviation Center – which will be based in Shanghai – is being constructed as China begins to relax some of the more stringent controls imposed by Beijing over the country's airspace, and will be overseen by Shanghai's airport authority and Australia's Hawker Pacific Pty Ltd.

After its construction, the aviation center will be home to around 5,000 square meters of hangar space and 3,000 square meters of operations and passenger space, with other special facilities available. The estimated total cost of the project stands at around CNY80m (USD11.6m).

Once fully operational, it is expected that the center will handle around 6,000 flights a year, with the hub's predominant custom generated by business travellers journeying around Asia.

At present, China's military has control over about 80% of the country's airspace, leading to calls from the aviation industry for the government to focus more on the needs of civilian passengers.

However, despite the positive effects that the new private jet hub will hopefully have upon the country's aviation sector, officials have warned that relaxing the regulations surrounding airspace in China will be a long and complicated process.
