by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

The news was announced by the country's National Defense Minister, Liang Guanglie, during a visit to his Japanese counterpart Yasukazu Hamada, and confirms mounting speculation that the country was planning to build a carrier.

Mr Liang has described China's navy as "weak" at present, hence the need for a carrier to support the fleet.

A specific build and deployment schedule has yet to be announced.
