Canada To Champion Free Trade Access For Stymied Firms

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

The Canadian Government is asking exporters to report any tax and non-tax trade barriers holding back their businesses.

The Government has launched a new webpage for Canadian firms to report information about the barriers they face. The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service and partner departments will then work with them to address these barriers.

Businesses will be asked to provide a description of the trade barrier, the specific tariff applied, and the impact the barrier has on their business.

According to the website, "The Trade Commissioner Service may be able to reduce, resolve or even prevent trade barriers from happening." It says: "Some barriers can be cleared up quickly, but others can take several years to resolve. The timeframe will depend on the nature of the trade barrier and also on the willingness of the foreign partner to help overcome such barriers. Some may never be resolved for reasons beyond Canada's control."

International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne commented: "Our Government is committed to ensuring that Canadian businesses are able to access new markets with confidence and with support from Canada's export agencies. The new trade barriers webpage is another tool to assist Canadian exporters in dealing with the often challenging obstacles to trade that they face in those new markets."
