Canada, Japan Conclude First Round of Trade Negotiations

06 December 2012

Canada and Japan have announced the productive conclusion of a first full round of negotiations toward an economic partnership agreement.

The negotiations took place in Tokyo at the end of last month. According to the Canadian Trade Minister Ed Fast, progress was made across a broad range of areas, including market access for goods and services, investment and government procurement.

It is estimated that a trade agreement between Canada and Japan could result in a boost of CAD3.8bn (USD3.8bn) to Canadian gross domestic product (GDP). A Joint Study found that Canadian exports to Japan could increase by as much as 67% and lead to gains for Canadian exporters of goods and services in a variety of sectors.

Japan is Canada’s largest source of job-creating investment from Asia. In 2011, Canadian exports to Japan totaled almost CAD10.7bn. Leading merchandise exports to Japan included mineral fuels and oils, and agriculture and agri-food products.

“Opening new markets in large and dynamic economies around the world helps create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity here at home for Canadian families. Canada and Japan already enjoy a comprehensive economic relationship, and taking it to the next level through these negotiations is a key part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan,” Fast said.
