Canada, China Free Trade Talks Stall

by Mike Godfrey,, Washington

06 December 2017

Efforts to get free trade talks underway between Canada and China have stalled, after the two countries failed to reach an agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing on December 4. It had been anticipated by some that the meeting would be followed by the formal announcement of plans to launch negotiations toward a free trade agreement (FTA). However, no such announcement was forthcoming.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trudeau said: "Canada is committed to moving forward on progressive trade deals that involve things like chapters on gender, on environment, on labor. China is very aware that this is a precedent as they move forward with a first trade deal with a G7 country, and there's a desire to make sure that we get it right."

Trudeau explained that the respective governments will continue their exploratory discussions toward a prospective FTA.

Trudeau stressed that, "done properly, a trade agreement would benefit both countries, creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and growing our economies." He added that both sides are "very much in agreement that we need to get this right and move forward at the proper pace."

A statement posted on Trudeau's website said that he and Li "look forward to continuing exploratory discussions towards a comprehensive trade agreement between Canada and China. With China, as with all of our trading partners, we are committed to pursuing trade that benefits everyone, that puts people first, and reflects Canadian values, especially when it comes to the environment, labor, and gender."
