COVID-19: Austria Suspends Tax Administrative Proceedings

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

15 April 2020

The Austrian Ministry of Finance has announced that proceedings in relation to tax offences and the payment of duties and fees will be extended due to restrictions on movement imposed as a result of the COVID-19 virus.

Deadlines for appeals, objections, the submission of applications, and complaints relating to legal proceedings on cases which were underway on March 16, 2020, or which the relevant period begins to run in the period from March 16 to April 30, 2020, have been extended until May 1, 2020, the ministry said.

The extension of these deadlines also applies to foreign taxable persons, the ministry said.

These extended deadlines may be postponed further through a Government ordinance if restrictions on movement remain in place.

Additionally, the ministry confirmed that grants received by businesses suffering financially from the health crisis will be exempt from tax, although the expenses that they cover will still be considered as operating expenses.
