British Columbia Offers PST Help To Businesses

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

05 December 2012

The British Columbian government is offering free webinars designed to help businesses prepare for next year's return to the provincial sales tax (PST) system.

The Canadian province currently operates a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) system, under which the 7% PST and the 5% federal general sales tax (GST) are blended to create an overall HST rate of 12%. The HST is collected at federal level, with the appropriate revenues redistributed to the province. The HST regime was introduced in 2010, but taxpayers voted to restore the previous PST/GST regime in a referendum last year.

The PST/GST regime will be reinstated next April at a combined rate of 12%, and British Columbia will have to repay a CAD1.6bn (USD1.6bn) transition payment provided by the federal government when the HST was first introduced.

The webinar program begins this month and will cover general principles of the PST and eTaxBC - the new e-service for online registration, return filing and payment, and account maintenance. Registration for eTaxBC begins January 2, 2013.

The webinars form part of a wider outreach program which includes free consultations with tax specialists.
