Brazil's Rural Tax Settlement Program Deadline Nearing

by Glen Shapiro, Tax-News.com, Washington

20 September 2017

Brazil's Inland Revenue has said that farmers have until September 29, 2017, to agree to settle tax debts to avail themselves of reduced penalties and interest charges.

The scheme covers tax debts for tax years after 2001. It allows taxpayers to reduce fines and interest on outstanding tax bills by agreeing to repayment in up to 176 installments. Qualifying taxpayers must settle four percent of their debt, and any penalty on that portion, by December 2017. Fines will reduced by 25 percent on the balance and interest waived.

Farmers who owe more than BRL15m (USD4.8m) in tax must repay their debt in installments of at least BRL1,000 a month.

Taxpayers can opt to transfer debts from previous repayment initiatives in full to the new scheme.
