Brazil's Rio De Janeiro To Levy 'Netflix Tax'

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

18 October 2017

Brazilian city Rio De Janeiro is planning to introduce tax on online streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify.

In December 2016, Brazil passed a law to extend the tax on services (Imposto sobre Serviços (ISS)) to streaming services providers, requiring that they pay the levy to the municipalities where their customers are based.

The tax will be charged at two percent. A similar tax for the city of Sao Paulo is set to be introduced in 2018 and will be charged at 1.09 percent.
