Belated Dreamliner Sees First Delivery

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

28 September 2011

Boeing has welcomed the delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner to All Nippon Airways. The long-awaited conclusion of Boeing's development programme comes after years of setbacks for the belated model, many relating to component supply.

Boeing and All Nippon Airways announced that formal documents completing the contractual delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner were concluded on September 25. Celebrations to mark the milestone began on September 26 in Boeing's assembly plant in Everett, Washington state, followed by a delivery ceremony and flyaway of the airplane on September 27.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner contains a host of technologies aimed at mitigating operational costs, while providing enhanced levels of onboard comfort. It is the first long-range mid-size passenger plane, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes.

Composite materials, more electrical systems, advanced aerodynamics and modern engines combine to make the 787 more fuel efficient and provide lower operating costs. Upon its inception, the 787 Dreamliner was designed to use 20% less fuel than airplanes of comparable size.

As of August 2011, a total of 821 firm orders had been placed for 787 variations, the 787-8 and the 787-9.
