Azzam Takes Title Of World's Largest Superyacht

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

15 April 2013

German shipyard Lurssen has delivered the world's largest superyacht, Azzam, to an undisclosed owner. It is thought likely to have been commissioned by Saudi investor and royal family member, Alwaleed bin Talal Alsaud.

Azzam - 'dedication' in Arabic - measures in at 590 feet (180 meters) in length, with a 68.2-foot wide beam. The yacht is substantially larger than Roman Abramovich's 557 foot Eclipse, delivered by Blohm and Voss Shipyards in 2010.

Designed and delivered within just four years, Azzam cost significantly less, at an estimated USD400m, than Abramovich's Eclipse, which includes two swimming pools, two helipads, a missile defence system, a mini 'escape' submarine, and a "laser shield", which targets sources of electronic light such as that produced by digital cameras to ensure privacy.

Azzam will house a crew of 50, and accommodate up to 32 guests. The superyacht will be substantially faster than its peers, able to travel at speeds up to 30 knots.
